What is Liposuction?

When you are over weight typically you look fat. Some people will reduce their weight and others may want to get rid of fat surgically to look better. They can have the fat is sucked from their bodies. This operation is called liposuction. Lipo means fat. Lipo is also the short term for the process. So you can say, “I’m going to have a lipo.”

Liposuction is done everywhere around the world and is one of the most common cosmetic surgeries. People end up with a leaner look by losing inches, not pounds. Liposuction is not the treatment for being over weight. Thus if your doctor told you to reduce your weight for your heart or diabetes you cannot undergo aliposuction and improve your health.

To perform a liposuction operation the cosmetic surgeon makes small cuts in your skin and then puts tubes into the cuts. The tubes are connected to an aspirator (a machine with a pump to suck materials in) and the fat is sucked out from under your skin.

You may have local anesthetics and thus awake or select general anesthesia and thus asleep while the liposuction is going on. The selection depends on many factors including if any other procedures are done at the same time. Often in cosmetic surgery you may do more than one thing at a time to save on costs.

If you only have a lipo and were awake during the surgery, after the procedure is over you are likely to be able to up and around quickly. On the other hand, if you were asleep, getting back to normal might take a few days. After the operation you wear a special girdle or “waist nipper” or wraps for other parts of the body for a while. This helps your skin get tight again.

• Calves
• Back
• Knees

As I mentioned you can have more than one area treated on the same day. And you can combine procedures in one day to save costs such as operating theater, anesthesia, recovery room and so on.
