Information about breast augmentation procedure.

Breast augmentation is one of the most popular elective surgeries in the USA and yet there is much misinformation about this common cosmetic surgery procedure. The aim of this post is to being out correct breast augmentation information to the open (if you forgive the semi pun). You may also wish to read our breast augmentation glossary for further details of some terms.

History of breast augmentation:

Breast augmentation surgery started with major disasters in the late nineteenth century to continue its inauspicious beginnings in the late forties when many Japanese prostitutes had silicone gel injected directly into their breast tissue. Modern breast enhancement cosmetic surgery started in 1962 with the introduction of the first silicone implants. These kept the silicone gel in an inert silicone envelope thus lessening immune reactions and rejection – hardening and autoimmune diseases.

Later the silicone implants were banned for use in most cosmetic breast augmentation surgeries by the FDA (Federal Drugs Administration). This led to the introduction of saline implants (implants filled with sterile salt water). However after much research the FDA allowed the use of silicone gel implants again and now (2009) you have the choice of silicone, saline and other implants filled with alternative materials (soy bean oil is one such choice).

Breast augmentation costs:

There is no fixed cost for breast augmentation operations. The costs can vary between four to forty thousand if you use a “celebrity” plastic surgeon to the stars in Beverly Hills or Manhattan. At the other end many people in Southern California go to Tijuana for all sorts of bargain operations especially elective ones such as cosmetic surgery where insurance does not pay. Breast augmentation is one of those operations I have heard people getting at a great bargain in Mexico.

We do not recommend cosmetic surgery tourism unless you have friends and family living in the country that you are going to but in this globalized world many people are using this type of outsourcing to lower their plastic surgery costs. At the same time you can shop around in your locality and negotiate to get better prices. This is especially true in today’s tough economic times.

Breast augmentation and health insurance:

While insurance plans do not typically pay for cosmetic breast augmentation, they often pay for the first reconstructive breast implant. Some insurance companies may pay to take out damaged implants or to remove them when the patient is under pain or suffers other medical problems thanks to implants but usually they will not pay for the portion of the operation to replace the damaged implant with new ones.

You really need to talk to your insurance company about your individual case.

Who makes a good candidate for breast augmentation surgery:

Basically you have to be self confident, and have high self esteem in order to best make use of any cosmetic surgery and having a boob job is no different. You need to understand that looks aren’t everything and aesthetic surgery is no panacea or silver bullet.

Most women who enhance their breasts claim they are doing it for themselves and that is good. You should never undergo any type of surgery to please another (your significant other, mother, friends and so on). At the same time many people have cosmetic surgery to improve their chances of getting a job – this is especially true in East Asia in the current economic climate.

Of course many strippers and other “sex workers” have been in the forefront of having “mega boob jobs.” No doubt this could be considered an investment in their professions.

No matter what if you are not pleased with yourself the way you are (because of your inside) you will not be pleased with yourself just because you change your outside.

The best candidates also need minor size or size adjustment. Be very careful to examine all before and after scenarios especially given today’s high tech video modeling tools which allow you to see how you would look after any breast augmentation operation.

Types of implants:

There are three types of implants for breast augmentation:

Silicone gel filled implants.

Saline implants.

Alternative (experimental like soy bean oil).

I have compared the advantages of the two most prevalent types (silicone implants vs. saline) elsewhere. There are also many choices of the lumen (the silicone rubber shell). I’ll write in further details about these later. Just spend some time investigating the different options with you board certified plastic surgeon.

Types of incision for breast augmentation:

Inframammary
Within the breast fold.

Periareolar
Around the nipple.

Transaxillary
Under the arm.

Transumbilical
Under the belly button. This procedure is called TUBA (transumbilical breast augmentation).

Each of the above four incision points have their respective advantages and disadvantages.

Placement of the implants in breast augmentation:

Subglandular
When the implant is placed under and within the breast glands but on top of the chest muscles.

Submuscular
When the implant is placed underneath the chest muscles. Subglandular and submuscular are the two places the implant may be placed.

Again they each have their advantages and disadvantages. Also note that individual plastic surgeons have their own preferences and have different levels of experience with the alternatives. Also note that some can only be done with a certain type of implant. For example the TUBA (going through the belly button) can only be performed with saline implants which are filled after correct placement.

I have written about other breast augmentation information elsewhere and here are the links:

We all know why some ladies wish to enlarge their breasts through plastic surgery. I have written about some of the dangers in detail and I’ll write about some of the following in further detail as well. Here is a small list of potential problems with getting a boob job:
